Always have a map, a city guide and information about your accommodations location with you. At least you will be able to use some visual material to communicate your needs.

Do not leave your luggage unattended - is very true for Moscow. Not that it will be taken by force, this kind of robbery does not happen anymore, but just leaving it aside could be a huge temptation to those with dishonest intentions.

Avoid small streets and empty street during the night time. If your aim is tourism then stick to tourist routes. If you want some adventure and exploration then have some company and assistance from your Russian friends.
